Teachers should try asking questions “first”…

Teachers are used to asking questions *after* students have read a section of the textbook, viewed a movie clip, watched a demonstration, performed a lab experiment, or have been engaged in some other type of learning activity.

However, questioning is an effective teaching tool that can and should be used *before* the learning experience as well.

By using questions before engaging students in some type of learning activity the teacher is able to tap into students’ prior knowledge about the topic and therefore improve their comprehension.

Furthermore, questioning before the learning activity will also help students focus on specific targets or objectives.

So next time you’re about to start some type of learning activity try asking a few questions first.
