Should teachers ask “unusual” questions?

Questioning is at the heart of almost every classroom lesson. Teachers ask hundreds of questions every day. In fact, some studies show middle school teachers asking as many as 100 questions in a single class period.

With teachers asking so many questions I thought I would point something out…

Teachers should try to stay way from focusing questions on what the teacher deems as unusual or interesting.

Often times teachers may structure questions around information that the teacher perceives as interesting. Teachers do this assuming that it will increase the student’s interest in the topic as well.

However, the truth is the more students gain a deeper understanding of the material the more likely they are to be interested in the topic. While obscure facts will serve as nothing more than a distraction to most students.

Therefore a teacher’s question should focus on gaining a deeper understanding rather than on obscure and unusual facts.
