The New Teaching Tips Machine Forum is up and running

Sunday 7 January 2007 @ 3:01 pm

I finally decided to put my fears behind me and launch the teaching forum that I have always wanted.

However, the forum is only worthwhile if it is active so I encourage all of you to become active members.

My hope is that this can be a place where teachers can help other teachers become better teachers :)

teaching procedures…

Saturday 6 January 2007 @ 12:12 am

Hi everyone,

First of all, I may have made a mistake and had you sign up for automatic email notifications before I was actually ready and therefore you may have misse dmy last post…

If that is the case make sure to scroll down and read that post first! It’s all about my teacing plan for the week and how important it is to teacher and re-teach classroom procedures.

Well, as a quick follow-up I wanted to say how GREAT things went this first week back to teaching.  We only had two teaching days this week and I used them to teach, or rather re-teach, classroom rules and procedures.  I also used this time to have stuents set goals and come up with specific strategies for reaching those goals for third quarter.

In all honesty, I could not be happier with how these first two teaching days went.  The students were responsive and and appear motivated to meet their 3rd quarter goal.

I’ll let know if it continues :)

Best Wishes,
Adam

P.S. the FORUM launches tomorrow!!!

My teaching plan for the week…

Tuesday 2 January 2007 @ 11:25 pm

As teachers head back to school this week they have a great opportunity to “start” the school year over.

What I mean is this…teachers should look at this recent time off for the holidays as a “mini summer break” and should start their classes after the break similar to how they started their classes at the beginning of the school year.

At the start of every school year teachers make sure to teach and rehearse the classroom  procedures with their students. There is no doubt that well taught and well rehearsed classroom procedures will certainly help students remain “on-task” and therefore decrease the chances of misbehavior.

It is important that teachers create a predictable system where students know what to expect during each and every class.  It doesn’t matter what the procedure is (sharpening pencils, raising hands, walking down the hallway, taking out textbooks, restroom procedures etc.), make sure you…Teach It!…Practice It!…and Reinforce It!

However, just because you taught and practiced the classroom procedures at the beginning of the school year doesn’t mean you are done.  You need to reinforce those procedures during the school year as well.  Don’t be afraid to do one or two of your first-week lessons mid-way through the year.

This first week back from break is a great opportunity to do just that.

Here in Manatee County we started back to school today, but we don’t have students until Thursday.  This is a nice and easy transition back to school for both the teachers and students.  But instead of getting right back into content this Thursday and Friday, I am going to spend the first couple of classes reviewing, practicing, and reinforcing the classroom rules and procedures.

While I may lose a couple teaching days to do so I believe it will pay off big in the long run…I’ll be sure to let you know.

Best Wishes,

Adam Waxler

The Teaching Tips Machine BLOG is back!

Monday 1 January 2007 @ 7:32 pm

As many of you know the server that hosts many of my web sites crashed and it has created a nightmare for my online business.

However, I hope to come back in 2007 stronger than ever before…

One of the first things I needed to do is get my Teaching Tips Machine Blog back up and running as the “crash of 2006”, as I now like to call it, mostly effected my blogs.  Unfortunately, I lost over a year and half worth of weekly teaching tips just like that!

Well, the new Teaching Tips Machine BLOG is now up and running and this time it will take on a new feel.  I will be not just be posting teaching tips, but this time the blog will be much more personal.  I will post at least once per week taking things from “the week in teaching” from my own classroom.  I will post what worked and what didn’t, my frustrations, ups & downs etc.  I want the blog to be about a real teacher in the “trenches” just like you. Why? Two reasons…

First,  I think too often people read my tips or ebooks and think that I have NO classroom management problems whatsoever.  That is simply not true.

Second, other people read my tips and/or ebooks and think that I am dealing only in theory and not in practice.  That is simply not true.

The fact of the matter is, I deal with the same highs and lows as many other teachers do.  And, the fact of the matter is I practice what I preach  in the same high-stakes testing world that we all teach in.

For these reasons I want to make my Teaching Tips Machine Blog much more personal…much more “real”.

Just make sure to sign up for the automatic email niotfications on the right hand side. :)

Happy New Year!

Be back soon…
